6th Street Connection Re-Opening

The 6th Street connection to 1st Avenue will re-open to traffic early Tuesday morning, September 18. Along with the re-opening of 6th Street, 1st Avenue traffic will shift onto the new westerly half of 1st Avenue from just south of 6th Street to Pipeline Road. Temporary traffic signals will control the 1st Avenue & 6th Street intersection until permanent traffic signals are installed later this year.

After the traffic shift is made on Tuesday morning, please note the following:

  • 1st Avenue at 6th Street will have one through lane and one dedicated left turn lane in both directions. The southbound left turn lane is for Iowa River Landing construction traffic only.
  • 6th Street will have one eastbound right turn lane, one eastbound left turn lane, and one westbound lane. A second eastbound left turn lane will open to traffic after the permanent traffic signals are installed.
  • Northbound 1st Avenue drivers approaching the 6th Street intersection will now zipper merge into the left lane, instead of the right lane.
  • North of Pipeline Road, 1st Avenue traffic will still run head-to-head on the easterly half of 1st Avenue as work continues on driveways, sidewalks, and lighting along the west side of 1st Avenue.
  • Pedestrians will use the new sidewalk corridor along the west side of 1st Avenue from just south of 6th Street to Pipeline Road. North of Pipeline Road, pedestrians will continue using the channelized corridor that has been in place for several months.

Drivers should take it slow through the work zone and please always keep an eye out for pedestrians, bicyclists, and construction workers!

Transit

Coralville Transit will resume bus service along 6th Street on Tuesday, September 18. For transit information, contact Coralville Transit at 319.248.1790 or visit www.coralville.org/transit.
